As you may be able to tell, I’ve always had an interest in makeup…
When I was very young I remember ALWAYS asking my mom to put her lipstick on me when I saw her reapplying. I think my sixth or seventh birthday party was even a “makeover party.” We had those awful, colored hair mascaras and everything. So 90s. As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to do my friends’ makeup for recitals and I lived for braiding hair and body glitter at slumber parties. I never actually had anyone teach me to do my makeup, though. My dad brought me to MAC when I was 12, so in hindsight we can blame this all on him.
Sometime in high school, people started uploading videos on YouTube telling you how to do your makeup. This is really where I learned–and still learn–about tips, tricks, techniques and products. Everyone knows about YouTube ‘beauty gurus’ but there’s so many now a days that it may be hard to figure out which ones you like and are worthwhile.
Here are some of my personal favorites:
All Time Favorite: MakeupByTiffanyD
I pretty much learned how to do my eyeshadow from Tiffany and would definitely say that I have a very similar makeup style to her. She is my favorite for eyeshadow tutorials and product recommendations. Tiffany also has a similar skin type to me so her recommendations are always very relevant. Keep your skin type in mind when taking recommendations for products like foundation. Something that one beauty guru loves may work completely different on your own skin.
Drugstore Makeup: Tati
Tati posts almost daily. She always has really good information on what’s new at the drugstore as well as how to get good deals. I also love her ‘Hot or Not’ series where she tells you about products she’s tested and lets you know whether they’re worth trying out or not. Her channel is one of the most informative product-wise in my opinion. She uses higher end makeup too, but her drugstore reviews are the best I’ve seen.
British Beauty Guru: EssieButton
I love Estée because she just seems so real, one of those people that you’d want to hang out with in real life. So she’s not actually British, she’s Canadian, but she’s been living in London since she started her channel a few years ago. I think it’s cool to see the trends and products on the other side of the Western world. It doesn’t hurt that she’s hilarious and fun to watch too.
Best Content and Editing: MissGlamorazzi
Ingrid is one of my favorites because her videos are always interesting and different. A lot of times they set the curve for other YouTuber’s content. I love how she edits videos, they always have season appropriate content and lots of fun B-roll. She also does great recipe and lifestyle videos.
Natural Products: Shannon Sullivan
If you read my recent blog post, Switching to Natural, you’ll know that I’ve been trying to change a lot of products I use to more natural options. I get a lot of recommendations from Shannon. She has Celiacs Disease so she has to be really careful about what she eats and puts on her face and body. She’s tried a ton of different products so it takes the guesswork out testing new natural products. She talks a bit about tea in this video, so if you’re not interested in that, go ahead and skip to around two minutes in.
Please comment below with your favorite YouTube beauty gurus! I’m always looking for new channels to watch 🙂
